COBOLworx is a subsidiary (project) of Symas Corporation. Started in 2017, the project has been developing COBOL-oriented software for open source systems (Linux, BSD, etc.) Our aim has been to add capabilities required by COBOL users on other platforms that are not available on those platforms.
In 2021, we decided that it was important to provide a Gnu Compiler Collection (GCC) “native” COBOL. The front-end to gcc is called gcobol. GCC COBOL was first shipped with GCC Release 15 in the Spring of 2025.
COBOLworx joined the GnuCOBOL project in 2018 because it was the compiler we were using on other projects. We developed and contributed a COBOL source-level debugging capability based on gdb (gdb-cobol) presently widely used on its own and under VS/CODE and VS/CODIUM.
