Project History

The project began as TinyCOBOL in 1999 and became OpenCOBOL in 2002. OpenCOBOL joined the GNU Project as GnuCOBOL in 2015.

Built on GCC

GnuCOBOL compiles COBOL source code to C. The GCC C compiler then produces native binary programs.

GnuCOBOL supports the core COBOL language along with Report Writer and Screen Section functionality.

It also includes support for SQL, indexed files, XML, and JSON.
