Project History
The project began as TinyCOBOL in 1999 and became OpenCOBOL in 2002. OpenCOBOL joined the GNU Project as GnuCOBOL in 2015.

A mature open source COBOL compiler with broad language coverage, support for established COBOL dialects, and a GCC-based toolchain.
Mature Open Source Project

GnuCOBOL compiles COBOL source code to C. The GCC C compiler then produces native binary programs.

It also includes support for SQL, indexed files, XML, and JSON.
GnuCOBOL accepts numerous proprietary COBOL dialects, including IBM and Micro Focus dialects.
